I have a lot of people that are in that exact position where they're convinced they've got a problem or a family member's got a problem and they say how do we decide the best treatment. And generally what I recommend to people is to find a physician who is certified and trained in addiction medicine not affiliated with a particular treatment program or modality and simply have that person assess and enter into partnership with them to really sort out the various treatment options and to have them follow you to see how you're responding to those treatments. So if in affect you try a treatment approach that doesn't utilize medication, that's not working then medications become something you can consider. Or if you're trying a particular medication and that doesn't work they can explore alternative medications that may work even far better for you.
