Do You Have Drug Resistant Acne? | HealthiNation

Im dermatologist Doctor Bobby Buka. Sometimes acne doesn't respond to over the counter cleansers and creams. Some people just need a stronger medication -- and that's when we use prescription antibiotics. These have worked well in the past... but the bacteria that cause acne -- and are killed by the antibiotics -- are crafty (or cunning?). They've mutated and formed new strains that have developed a resistance to the antibiotics. That means these drugs no longer work at clearing up pimples and other blemishes. I know it can be frustrating ... especially during breakouts. So, what to do? If you're on an antibiotic for acne, talk to your dermatologist about using Benzoyl Peroxide too. When used in combination, these reduce the risk of developing those new resistant forms of the bacteria. And, that means the treatment should work better at clearing up breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide comes in different strengths... and may cause side effects. But for people with hard-to-treat acne, it's an option worth exploring with your doctor.
